MEASURING BAUMÈ CONCENTRATION

Determine the mixing proportions.

For example, 1 lbs of cerium / 3 gallons of water = 4% - Use deionized water.

Measure out required volume of deionized water into a clean container.

By weight, measure out the right amount of cerium oxide powder.

Optimum polishing results can only be achieved by careful and accurate cerium slurry preparation and maintenance.

 

Maintaining the proper cerium concentration (solids to liquid ratio) is vital to efficient glass polishing. The concentration of cerium oxide in a slurry is measured with a float hydrometer, reading in degrees Baume.

While stirring the water, sprinkle the cerium oxide powder into the water. Avoid adding the powder too quickly to avoid agglomeration.

Continue to stir the slurry for 5 to 10 minutes after all the powder has been added.

Pour slurry into

graduated cylinder.

Place hydrometer in slurry and take reading.

After each adjustment, repeat steps 5 and 6 until the targeted hydrometer Baume reading is achieved.

Slurry Baume should be checked every two hours by collecting a sample slurry from the slurry tank, and repeat steps 5 and 6 to obtain the Baume reading

Technical Specification for Tyflong Ceriflo-45 Polishing Slurry

 

Ceriflo-45 is a 45% w/v slurry of cerium oxide in water, formulated for improved stability during shipment and storage. The diluted slurry retards settling, and produces a soft sediment that is easily resuspended with minimal agitation.

There will be some settling of the slurry during shipment and storage. The slurry should be mixed by inversion of the container, prior to dilution and use.

Packaging: 1gallon PTFE plastic bottles

Storage conditions: Store at ambient temperature, or with refrigeration, in the original container. Do not freeze.

Shelf life: Minimum of six months under specified storage conditions
